The Power that Made the Body Heals the Body

There is something so deeply spiritual about what we do.

And no, this is not a post about religion. To explain what I mean, let me tell you a story about the first time I cried after adjusting a patient:

About 3 or 4 months after graduation, I had a sweet 8-year-old autistic, non-verbal boy come to our practice. His mom was bringing him in primarily for focus and sensory processing challenges. She didn't know what to expect from care, but she knew she had tried everything else and her hope was wearing thin. So she came to see me, upon referral from the clinic where I interned.
Fast forward to the adjustment:
My preference when adjusting necks is to have the patient lie down on their back, but it can certainly be done sitting up as well. Upon trying to get this little guy to lie down, he seems too anxious to relax, so we just had him sit up. After trying to get him to lie down, he was tense...until the moment I placed my hands in the position for the adjustment. And at that moment, he melted into my handsIt's like he just knew what to do, even though I hadn't asked him to relax into my hands, and he had never seen it before.

But it was the moment AFTER the adjustment that caught me off guard. Upon adjusting him, his neck had a HUGE release, and his subluxation was gone. This release was pretty intense, and could have easily startled anyone, especially someone who maybe didn't have a complete grasp on what I was doing or why I was doing it. But then, as he let out a big sigh of relief,

He brought his hand to his mouth and signed the words, "Thank you."

Nobody said, "That was awesome!" or, "Tell her thank you." But somehow, this little guy just KNEW. He knew that what had just happened was something that he needed to thank me for. (So I held my composure until the family left, then I hid in my office for a few minutes. Don't judge.)

There is something so profound about the power that our body has to function and heal if we just let it
But unfortunately, we often fight this power that our body has.
We put junky food in it; so now it doesn't have the proper nutrition to heal.
We don't move and exercise it; so now it thinks that a sedentary lifestyle is what it is restricted to.
We let emotional stress pile on more and more and more; so now we are geared toward a stress response and can't even decipher what's ACTUALLY stressful, vs. what's not.
We interfere in its healing process; so now when it's trying to heal with things like fevers and vomiting and cough, we inhibit what healing power our body does have simply by doubting and questioning its power.

"The power that made the body heals the body."
B.J. Palmer

You can find this quote posted two places in our office, because it's THAT important to us.
Let's start trusting our bodies. Let's start giving it what it needs to function and heal and THRIVE! Our body was designed to thrive, we just have to let it.
